Apakah Indonesia menjajah Timor Leste? Itu pertanyaan yang mungkin coba dijawab oleh buku ini. Kenyataan bahwa Timor Leste pernah menjadi bagian dari Indonesia memang benar, namun tidak menjadi kawasan jajahan. Dia menjadi wilayah yang sama dengan provinsi lainnya.

Buku ini berusaha menjelaskan dengan lebih berimbang sudut pandang dari dua belah pihak yang berkonfrontasi. Dari orang-orang pro-kemerdekaan dan juga yang pro-Integrasi Indonesia, sudut pandang pendatang dan juga orang asli Timor Leste. Bahkan juga membawa pendapat praktis dari rakyat yang tidak ikut-ikutan dengan politik.

Dalam penelusuran di internet, hanya terdapat satu artikel mengenai buku ini. Padahal buku ini sudah terbit sejak tahun 2015. Ulasan itu mengatakan kalau buku ini adalah narasi tunggal dari masalah Timor Leste. Sebenarnya juga tidak, buku ini merupakan narasi lain dari yang sudah ada sebelumnya. Buku ini bukanlah satu-satunya narasi-sastra mengenai Timor Leste. Sebelumnya ada beberapa cerita pendek karangan Seno Gumira Ajidharma yang juga membahas hal yang sama. Sudut pandang penilaian itu hal biasa. Sebab tak ada monopoli pendapat.

Novel ini bercerita tentang Vittoria, remaja berusia 15 tahun dari Oxford itu berkunjung ke Timor Leste untuk mencari tahu mengenai ibunya. Dibawanya sebuah kotak coklat yang berisi Buku harian dan surat-surat peninggalan ibunya. Dia datang menemui Antonia, saudara dari kakeknya yang dulu merawat Helena, ibu dari Vittoria. Keluarga Antonio sangat terkejut melihat Vittoria. Helena, keponakan yang dirawatnya seperti anak sendiri, yang begitu dinanti kepulangannya, ternyata kembali dalam bentuk Vittoria, putrinya yang mirip sekali dengannya.

Kemudian plot berpindah ke tahun 1975, menceritakan kisah ayah Helena dan ibu Helena, Alfonso dan Olivia dibunuh oleh tentara yang mengaku Pro-Indonesia. Sebagai keturunan bangsawan dan dianggap sebagai raja, Alfonso diajak untuk ikut dalam gerakan tentara. Dia diminta mengajak seluruh masyarakat yang mengikutinya untuk memilih kemerdekaan. Namun Alfonso menolak, dia menolak untuk ikut dalam masalah politik. Baginya yang terpenting adalah membantu masyarakat.

Pembunuhnya adalah Domingus, tentara Pro-Kemerdekaan yang kepada Antonio mengaku sebagai tentara pro-Indonesia. Helena kemudian dibesarkan oleh Antonia sebagai anaknya sendiri. Dia menjadi adik dari Anita, anak kandung Antonia yang pertama. Pengetahuannya tentang ayahnya yang dibunuh oleh Tentara Indonesia membuatnya membenci Indonesia. Sejak kecil dia menganggap orang Indonesia itu jahat.

Namun apa yang dia alami membuatnya mengambil kesimpulan berbeda. Bahwa kejahatan itu tidak bisa dilekatkan pada sebuah bangsa, sebab setiap orang juga berpotensi melakukannya. Pengalaman itu dia dapatkan ketika Vincente yang merupakan orang Timor asli, yang juga membenci Indonesia telah berlaku jahat kepadanya. Juga bagaimana dia belajar dari Pak Amo untuk melihat kebenaran. Untuk melihat sesuatu tanpa dibumbui dengan aneka hal yang melekat padanya. Ditambah lagi dengan jatuh cintanya Helena dengan Andera yang merupakan wartawan dari Indonesia.

Konflik politik begitu dominan dalam cerita ini. Dimulai dari Timor yang lepas dari pendudukan Portugis, sempat dikuasai oleh Fretilin yang berhaluan komunis, menjadi Provinsi ke-27 dari Republik Indonesia, hingga kemudian penentuan jejak pendapat untuk Otonomi luas atau Referendum.

Sosok wartawan seperti Andera yang merupakan kekasih Helena, memberikan sudut pandang yang berimbang antara orang yang pro-kemerdekaan Timor Leste dan juga yang Pro-Integrasi. Dari dia pun kita bisa mendapatkan sudut pandang dari orang-orang biasa yang tidak peduli pada keduanya. Bagi mereka yang lebih penting ialah kehidupan yang tenang dan damai. Mereka merasa tertekan oleh kedua belah pihak. Pihak tentara gerilya yang mengintimidasi ikut memberontak, juga tentara Indonesia yang mencurigai mereka.
Saat ditanya mengenai kemerdekaan, mereka menjawab :

Kemerdekaan? Kenapa tidak. Itu sesuatu yang baru. Muda-mudahan membawa perubahan. Bayangkan ratusan tahun kami dijajah Portugis, lalu masuk Indonesia. Kapan kami bisa menguasai dan mengatur tanah kami sendiri? Terimakasih Indonesia telah membangun sekolah-sekolah dan rumah sakit, jalan-jalan dan pelabuhan. Tapi kami sebenarnya mencari kehidupan yang tenang dan damai. Bukan di bawah ancaman dan tekanan.

Andrea pun secara pribadi tidak menganggap Indonesia menjajah Timor Leste. Baginya Indonesia datang dan membangun sarana umum untuk masyarakat di sana. Mulai dari sekolah, jalan raya dan juga sarana umum lainnya. Bahkan Jakarta belum mengeruk sumber daya apa pun dari bumi Larosae.

Meski fakta yang terjadi adalah, Indonesia masuk menggunakan operasi militer di negara yang sudah merdeka. Partai lain yang tidak sepakat dengan Fretilin memilih untuk bergabung dengan Indonesia. Indonesia juga mendapatkan dukungan dari Amerika dan Australia yang tidak menghendaki munculnya negara komunis baru di kawasan Asia Tenggara.

Tidak bisa dipastikan apakah pemerintah Indonesia di tahun 1975 itu, yang dipimpin oleh Presiden Soeharto memiliki ambisi teritorial atas Bumi Kayu Cendana tersebut. Namun dengan didukungnya Indonesia oleh dua negara besar, juga permintaan partai-partai yang anti dengan Fretilin cukup menguatkan untuk melakukan operasi militer ke sana. Tidak bisa dimungkiri bahwa Tentara Indonesia bertindak di luar batas. Peristiwa Santa Cruz pada tahun 1991 merupakan tragedi pembunuhan yang sadis.

Namun, melihat kedua negara besar yang awalnya mendukung Indonesia itu sebagai pihak yang bersih dari kepentingan, menganggap mereka tidak memainkan siasat politik untuk kepentingannya sendiri tak bisa dibenarkan. Sebab kedua negara tersebut pada akhirnya juga mendukung Timor Leste dalam mencapai Referendum. Bisa dibenarkan pendapat Andrea

…Kalau dirunut dari belakang, semua bermula saat Portugis angkat kaki dari sini. Waktu itu Fretilin hendak berkuasa dan ditengarai Amerika berhaluan komunis. Padahal Amerika baru tersingkir dari Vietnam. Mereka cemas oleh efek domino di Asia Tenggara. Karena itu mereka meminta Indonesia berperan mengambil tindakan. Australia mendukung tentu ada kepentingannya, soal keamanan di beranda sumah mereka. Tapi apa lacurnya? Sekarang mereka lepas tangan. Mereka juga bermain di sini. Politik global selalu mencari keuntungan buat diri sendiri. Kita jadi tahu siapa yang oportunis sebenarnya.

Secara alur, cerita ini memberikan penggambaran yang baik. Tidak membingungkan walau penceritaannya maju mundur. Ditulis dengan mendasarkan pada Cerita Antonia dan Andrea, buku Harian Helena, dan perjalanan Vittoria sebagai tokoh utama. Dalam buku harian Helena pun dia menuliskan simpatinya pada sosok Xanan Gusmao. Sebagai novel pertama, buku ini tampak di rangkai dengan masak oleh penulisnya, Eufrasia Vieira dan Les D. Soeriapoetra.

Dilihat dari frasa yang digunakan, tampaknya penulis cukup berpengalaman dalam karya sastra. Hanya saja terdapat beberapa kalimat dan juga kesimpulan klise yang membosankan. Seperti kalimat “Di mana bumi di pijak, di situ langit di junjung” untuk mengomentari pendatang yang secara budaya berbeda dengan orang Timor. Kalimat kearifan apa pun bila tanpa pengantar yang baik malah menjadi tidak menarik. Drama yang juga sulit diterima adalah tentang Vincente yang masih saja mendekati Helena, bahkan sampai sesudah Helena melahirkan anaknya bersama Andrea. Mengejar Andrea bersama anaknya ke perbatasan yang kemudian ditembak oleh tentara baret merah.

Secara fisik, bentuk sampul utama tampak mengecoh, sebab terasa tidak menjelaskan isinya. Setelah menyelesaikan ceritanya, menjadi tidak jelas siapa tokoh yang menjadi sampul buku ini, apakah Helena atau Vittoria? Gambar kotak coklat di bagian sampul belakang juga tidak membangkitkan penasaran apa pun. Sampul yang baik dari sebuah novel biasanya yang dapat mewakili suasana dalam perjalanan cerita. Entah pertimbangan apa yang digunakan dalam pemilihan sampul buku ini?

Setelah napak tilas di Goa tempat kelahiran dan juga makam ibunya. Vittoria meneruskan pesan ayahnya untuk memaafkan orang yang sudah membunuh kakeknya. Dia juga meminta kakek Antonia untuk mengunjungi Domingus dan memaafkannya. Apa yang sudah terjadi pada masa lalu hanya boleh menjadi pelajaran, tak boleh menjadi dendam. Sisi rekonsiliasi ini penting dalam mengakhiri cerita yang penuh polemik ini. Dengan begini, pembaca tidak terhenti pada akhir konflik dengan menyalahkan satu pihak.
