KITA “TERBUAT” DARI KEMATIAN: Makna Positif Kematian bagi Kehidupan

Tulisan dengan tema kematian ini tentu saja tidak hendak mengajak orang untuk (latihan) mati, melainkan untuk merenungkan kematian.

Mungkin kebetulan yang agak aneh bahwa pada Maret 2024 ini dua tulisan saya dengan tema kematian terbit. Tulisan pertama adalah epilog pada buku “Filosofi Kematian” yang ditulis oleh Dhimas Anugrah dan Jessica Lay, sementara tulisan kedua berupa bab dalam buku “Filsafat Maut” yang ditulis oleh empat orang: saya, F. Budi Hardiman, Romo S.P Lili Tjahjadi dan Romo Setyo Wibowo. Dalam buku kedua ini, saya menulis kematian dari perspektif idealisme Hegel, F. Budi Hardiman dari perspektif Heidegger, Romo Simon Lili dari perspektif Bushido, Romo Setyo dari perspektif Stoikisme.

Epilog yang saya tulis pada buku Filosofi Kematian (Kanisius) berjudul “Dialektika Kematian: Makna Positif Kematian Bagi Kehidupan”, sementara book chapter dalam buku Filsafat Maut (Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia-KPG) berjudul: “Momen Kehidupan adalah Momen Kematian: Sebuah Sketsa Awal tentang Teori Kematian berdasarkan Idealisme Hegel.”

Tulisan dengan tema kematian ini tentu saja tidak hendak mengajak orang untuk (latihan) mati, melainkan untuk merenungkan kematian. Tapi ungkapan inipun sebenarnya tidak tepat, karena kita tidak mungkin merenungkan kematian. Pengalaman kematian tidak mungkin direnungkan, sebab ketika seseorang telah mati, ia tidak mungkin lagi merenungkan pengalaman itu. Memang banyak manusia yang mati, tapi belum pernah ada manusia yang mengalami kematian. Sebab, begitu seseorang mati, ia tidak dapat lagi mengalami kematian, apalagi memikirkannya.

Mungkin saja orang masih menyadari detik-detik terakhir ketika ia menghadapi kematian, namun pada saat itu pasti sudah sangat terlambat untuk menuliskan renungan tersebut. Manusia tidak pernah mengalami kematian diri sendiri, ia hanya dapat menyaksikan kematian orang lain. Tapi bagaimana pun, itu tetap bukan pengalaman mengenai kematiannya sendiri. Dan orang yang sudah mati tidak mungkin lagi dapat menceritakan pengalaman kematiannya.

Karena itu, kata Immanuel Kant, kita tidak memiliki pengetahuan apa-apa tentang kematian. Semua cerita mengenai apa yang terjadi saat kematian, itu lebih berupa harapan, keinginan atau penghiburan belaka. Cerita-cerita itu sebenarnya tidak dapat dipertanggung-jawabkan. Terhadap cerita-cerita tersebut kita hanya dapat bersikap: percaya atau tidak.

Yang pasti adalah bahwa kematian menakutkan karena ia sama sekali ”gelap”. “Kematian adalah yang paling mengerikan dari semuanya,” tulis Aristoteles.

Tapi filsuf Yunani Kuno lainnya, Epikuros, menolak hal ini. “Kematian, yang paling mengerikan dari semua hal-hal buruk, sama sekali tidak penting bagi kita. Karena, kalau kita hidup, kematian tidak terjadi, dan kalau kita mati, kita tidak lagi hidup. Karena itu, kematian itu tidak penting, baik bagi yang hidup maupun bagi yang mati. Sebab bagi yang hidup, kematian itu belum terjadi dan bagi yang mati ia tidak lagi hidup (untuk mengalami dan memikirkan kematian).”

Lalu mengapa kita toh membicarakan kematian? Dalam arti apa kematian masih dapat dibicarakan?

Kematian itu penting direnungkan sebagai fenomena eksistensial, fenomena kehidupan. Tanpa kematian, maka kita akan menjalani kehidupan yang sama sekali lain. Kematian itu sangat menentukan kehidupan kita. Sesungguhnya semua yang kita lakukan dalam hidup kita sekarang: belajar, menikah, punya anak, bekerja, merencanakan berbagai hal, membuat janji hingga menerbitkan buku, dan lain-lain semua itu mengandaikan fakta bahwa suatu saat kita akan mati. Kalau kita tidak akan mati (immortal), maka kita akan berada dalam penundaan abadi untuk melakukan semua itu.

Hegel bahkan menyebut kematian sebagai ”Tuan absolut” (der absolute Herr) karena dialah yang mengorientasikan keseluruhan hidup kita di dunia ini. Dalam Dialektika Tuan-Budak dalam buku Phänomenologie des Geistes, Hegel mengatakan: ”Takut akan Tuan atau Kematian adalah permulaan kebijaksanaan.” Ketakutan akan kematianlah yang membuat Budak bekerja keras, mendisiplinkan diri, meningkatkan kapasitas-kapasitasnya dan itulah yang menggerakkan sejarah dan menghasilkan kemajuan.

Gagasan inilah yang kemudian dilanjutkan oleh Karl Marx dalam filsafat pekerjaannya. Ia mengatakan, kaum proletar adalah kaum bijaksana yang menjadi soko guru kemajuan sejarah. Dan mereka pula kelak yang akan menjadi pemenang dalam sejarah setelah mengambil-alih seluruh kekayaan kapitalisme yang merupakan hasil negasi-diri mereka.

Kematian memang buruk bagi kehidupan karena ia mengakhiri begitu saja semua yang telah kita hasilkan dalam kehidupan. Tapi, jangan salah, ketidak-dapat-matian jauh lebih buruk lagi. Kalau manusia tidak dapat mati, hidup selamanya, pasti kehidupan menjadi sedemikian tidak berharga, absurd.

Justru karena kita akan mati suatu saat, maka kehidupan kita berharga. Kalau kita memiliki durasi eksistensi yang tidak terbatas, maka tidak ada apapun yang berharga dalam hidup ini, sebagaimana sebutir pasir di gurun pasir tidak ada harganya. Untunglah kita pasti mati (entah kapan), sehingga itu membuat hidup kita berharga, kata filsuf Martha Nussbaum.

Kematian berada pada struktur yang paling mendasar dalam kehidupan kita. Eksistensi kita adalah ”Ada menuju kematian” (Sein zum Tode), kata Heidegger. Begitu kita lahir, maka potensi kematian telah sekaligus hadir dalam diri kita. Kehidupan kita telah selalu mengandung potensi itu. Kita seakan-akan membawa kematian itu sekaligus dalam kehidupan kita. Dan pada setiap titik dalam kehidupan kita, kematian yang merupakan potensialitas itu bisa menjadi aktualitas, bisa terjadi.

Tidak berlebihan mengatakan bahwa begitu manusia lahir, ia sudah cukup tua untuk mati. Momen kehidupan adalah momen kematian, kata Hegel.

Karena dapat terjadi kapan saja dalam perjalanan hidup kita, kematian itu tidak terletak di ujung kehidupan kita. Kematian itu selalu menyertai kehidupan kita, ia hadir sebagai potensi bersamaan dengan kehidupan. Kita seakan-akan telah selalu menyandang potensi kematian kita sepanjang hidup kita, dan potensi itu menentukan keseluruhan struktur kehidupan kita. Kita bisa mengatakan bahwa kematian adalah sebuah cara berada kita. Dengan kata lain, kita juga “terbuat” dari kematian. Kematian adalah salah satu materi pembentuk kehidupan.

Potensialitas kematian itu mengimplikasikan bahwa sesungguhnya tidak tepat mengatakan, sebagaimana sering kita dengar terhadap seseorang yang meninggal: „maut datang menjemputnya.“ Maut tidak datang dari mana-mana. Ia ada dalam kehidupan itu sendiri. Kematian terjadi, mungkin itu ungkapan paling tepat.

Di sini kata “terjadi” bermakna bahwa kematian itu adalah potensi yang telah menjadi aktualitas. Kematian itu berciri peristiwa. Sebagaimana di jalan raya selalu ada potensi kecelakaan, dan kalau potensi itu menjadi aktual, maka kita mengatakan peristiwa kecelakaan terjadi. Setiap kematian adalah sebuah peristiwa.

Tapi bukan hanya manusia yang mati. Tuhan juga mati. Frase ”kematian Tuhan” (Gott ist tot) mungkin populer melalui Nietzsche dan kepada filsuf inilah biasanya frase itu diatributkan. Namun sebenarnya bukan Nietzsche, melainkan Hegel-lah filsuf pertama yang berbicara tentang kematian Tuhan. Hegel sering menggunakan frase ini dalam tulisan-tulisannya.

Perbedaan mencolok dari penggunaan frase ini pada kedua filsuf ini adalah: Nietzsche menggunakannya untuk mengusung gagasan ateisme, sementara Hegel justru untuk teisme. Hegel sendiri menulis bahwa dunia ini dan keseluruhan sejarah adalah tempat penyaliban atau Golgota (die Schädelstätte) Roh Absolut.

Hegel mengatakan, kematian lebih dari sekadar peristiwa empiris-alamiah. ”Kematian memiliki dua makna: di satu sisi, lenyapnya yang alami, dan di sisi lain, kematian dari yang semata-mata alami dan melalui hal itu kelahiran dari sesuatu yang lebih tinggi, yakni wilayah spiritual….” Peristiwa kematian juga merupakan peristiwa spiritual. Dalam kematian, yang alami memang lenyap, tapi sekaligus yang spiritual juga memperlihatkan dirinya.

Dengan kata lain, peristiwa kematian bukan sekadar peristiwa privat partikular yang terbatas, tetapi juga peristiwa spiritual universal. Kematian adalah transisi dari individualitas menuju universalitas, tulis Hegel.

Ritus penguburan mayat, tari-tarian, pembakaran atau pelarungan abu jenasah ke laut, semua itu dapat dilihat sebagai proses pengembalian individu yang meninggal itu kepada yang universal. Kita tidak dapat mengatakan bahwa respek yang diperlihatkan melalui ritus-ritus tersebut semata-mata misalnya karena hubungan kekerabatan dengan orang yang meninggal. Sebab sekalipun misalnya orang meninggal itu tidak dikenal atau ia berupa mayat yang tidak dikenal, jenasahnya akan tetap dimakamkan dengan ritus kematian tertentu, misalnya dalam bentuk doa yang paling sederhana.

Itu memperlihatkan bahwa kematian lebih dari sekadar peristiwa empiris alamiah belaka. Setiap kematian adalah peristiwa spiritual universal karena melibatkan proses Roh itu sendiri, kata Hegel.

Bagaimana dengan kepercayaan akan kehidupan setelah mati? Masuk akalkah itu? Apakah itu hanya sekadar penghiburan belaka? Bagaimana kepercayaan itu dapat diberi pendasaran rasional?

Hegel mengatakan ide tentang kehidupan setelah mati itu tidak muncul dari keinginan manusia untuk hidup abadi, melainkan dari kesadaran rasional akan Roh atau Tuhan. Karena saya adalah manifestasi diri dari Roh, ciptaan Roh, maka dalam diriku juga ada Roh yang tidak terbatas. Dalam diriku ada yang Ilahi. Dan karena Roh itu kekal, maka Rohku juga kekal. Dan karena itu, jika tubuh fisikku mati, maka Rohku juga kembali ke kekekalannya.

Kepercayaan akan kehidupan setelah mati adalah buah kesadaran rasional manusia sebagai mahluk yang mengenal Tuhan. Immortalitas jiwa adalah penemuan manusia sebagai mahluk rasional.

Apa yang saya ungkapkan dalam tulisan singkat ini hanya sedikit dari apa yang saya uraikan dalam kedua tulisan di atas.
