Pada tahun 1988, Hassan Hanafi menerbitkan sebuah buku yang berjudul Min al-Aqidah Ila al-Tsaurah, yang secara literal bisa diartikan menjadi Dari Aqidah Menuju Gerakan atau, dalam kalimat yang terkesan lebih provokatif, Dari Aqidah Menuju Revolusi. Buku ini merupakan salah satu karya Hassan Hanafi yang paling penting, dan di dalamnya ia mengkritik praktik-praktik yang diterapkan dalam pengkajian teologi Islam dan menawarkan pemikiran segar untuk merekonstruksinya.
