Dua Guru dari Blora

Blora, Jawa Tengah, salah satu daerah basis kaum abangan di seberang utara benteng Van den Bosch, Ngawi, itu memiliki kesan tersendiri bagi saya. Bukan semata karena saya bersekolah di SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Ngawi. Bukan pula karena secara historis Blora banyak melahirkan para revolusioner pemberani seperti Samin Surosentiko, Tirtho Adhi Suryo, Mas Marco Kartodikromo, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Mbah Suro Nginggil, dan ada juga nama-nama para pemberontak pemberani yang sayangnya picik sektarian dalam visi perjuangannya seperti Kartosuwiryo penggagas DI/TII dan pendahulunya Arya Penangsang yang ingin memaksakan pola Islam Puritan di tanah Jawa di masa akhir kerajaan Demak Bintoro.

Dengan bekal kegemaran membaca sejarah, menekuni beberapa nama tokoh yang saya sebutkan itu, dan beberapa kali blusukan ke jalan-jalan hutan untuk bermain ke tempat teman saya, tentu saja saya sudah merasa memiliki persentuhan batin dengan daerah yang masih sangat luas rimba hutan jatinya itu.

Tetapi sebenarnya “perasaan” persentuhan batin saya yang lebih “mendalam” dengan Blora bukan karena hal-hal itu, melainkan karena di sanalah titik tempat lahir dua guru yang sangat berpengaruh dalam worldview intelektual dan spiritual saya.

Tanpa bersentuhan dengan dua guru itu mungkin saya tidak akan menjadi saya versi yang sekarang. Mungkin saya akan menjadi versi pribadi yang sangat lain. Dua guru dari tanah Blora yang sangat berpengaruh dalam hidup saya itu adalah sastrawan besar Indonesia Pramoedya Ananta Toer yang mulai saya akrabi tulisan-tulisannya di semester-semester akhir waktu kuliah dan satunya lagi adalah sesepuh sekaligus ketua STI (Sangha Theravada Indonesia) Bhante Sri Pannavaro Mahathera yang mulai saya akrabi wejangan-wejangan ceramah dhammanya di akhir kelas 3 SMK.

Jika Pramoedya sangat berjasa dalam mengukir corak dunia intelektual saya, maka Bhante Pannavaro sangat berjasa dalam melukis kanvas dunia batin saya. Tanpa “persentuhan sintetis” dari beliau berdua mungkin saya tidak akan menjadi pribadi yang utuh, bisa saja terjebak menjadi manusia yang berapi-api secara intelektual tetapi tidak mengenal semilir angin sejuk dari dunia rohani, atau bisa saja saya menjadi pribadi yang hanya berumah di atas angin spiritualitas tetapi lumpuh dan tidak bisa menjejak ke dalam bumi realitas.

Dari Pram, pandangan saya tentang intelektualitas (keterpelajaran), kemanusiaan, kebangsaan, politik, perempuan, dan penilaian tentang keningratan itu terukir. Soal keterpelajaran akhirnya saya mengerti bahwa surplus keterpelajaran atau intelektualitas itu harus mengejawantah, berguna, dan berpihak pada masyarakat, terlebih-lebih masyarakat kelas bawah yang tertindas secara sistemik.

Tidak bisa modal intelektual itu hanya menjadi sekadar “klangenan pribadi” sebagaimana para liberalis atau neo-priyayi yang menggunakan intelektualitas semata dalam diskusi-diskusi yang eksklusif elitis di menara gading dan tidak memiliki jejak-jejak kebermanfaatan yang nyata pada masyarakat secara luas. Sebenarnya pandangan Pram soal keterpelajaran itu sama persis dengan pandangan Antonio Gramsci seorang Neo-Marxis Itali soal Intelektual Organik, sebuah kiblat intelektual yang inklusif dan bersekutu pada rakyat kelas bawah.

Selanjutnya nilai-nilai tentang kemanusiaan dan kebangsaan dari Pram itu bagi saya juga sangat universal dan indah sekali, dalam setiap karya-karyanya tidak pernah Pram mengajarkan nasionalisme kebangsaan dengan semangat rasialisme rasisme.tentu saja dengan demikian ajaran Pram itu menjadi antitesis dari nasionalisme fasistik bentukan rezim Soeharto yang sangat dangkal, mengagungkan simbol, picik, anti kritik, rasis pada etnis tertentu, dan bahkan melacurkan diri pada kapitalis neo-imperialis Amerika.

Soal politik, dari Pram juga saya akhirnya tersadar bahwa sebagai anak bangsa kita tidak bisa untuk menutup mata dari persoalan politik, maka memilih apolitis atau golput dalam percaturan politik adalah sebuah kebodohan yang nyata dan wujud ketidakpedulian pada maju mundurnya bangsa ini. Oleh karena itu, jika ada orang yang mengaku begitu mencintai bangsa ini tetapi memilih golput, bagi saya orang seperti itu jelas tidak selaras antara ucapan dan perbuatannya.

Dulu di zaman kolonialisme Hindia Belanda saja meski gerakan seperti Saminisme di Blora itu dipandang apolitis, sebenarnya juga tidak demikian. Gerakan Samin jelas secara konkret juga berpolitik melawan kolonialisme dengan lugu membisu tidak mau membayar pajak. Perlawanan politik tanpa bedil dan granat dari gerakan Samin itu sama persis dengan gerakan politik Satyagraha dan Ahimsa yang diinisiasi oleh Mahatma Ghandi yang juga berwujud tanpa kekerasan dalam melawan kolonialisme Inggris di tanah India.

Sekarang pandangan Pram tentang perempuan. Dalam setiap karyanya Pram selalu memberi tempat yang sebaik-baiknya dan sehormat-hormatnya pada kaum perempuan. Tentu saja poligami dan KDRT pada perempuan adalah najis di mata Pram.

Tokoh perempuan dalam novel-novelnya semisal seperti Nyai Ontosoroh (dalam Tetralogi Pulau Buru), Gadis Pantai, dan Kartini selalu diposisikan berdaya, mampu berpikir mandiri, mampu mengambil sikap sendiri, dan juga berani melawan setiap panah kezaliman yang dialamatkan pada dirinya. Itulah luar biasanya Pram, berhasil mengajarkan nilai-nilai kesetaraan gender tanpa wacana teori feminisme yang bertele-tele.

Bagaimana Pramoedya memandang perempuan dengan sebaik-sebaiknya dan sehormat-sehormatnya, begitupun saya, berusaha dengan kukuh mewarisi nilai-nilai yang “bermartabat” seperti itu. Tidak ketinggalan pacar saya pun juga saya kenalkan dengan pemikiran-pemikiran Pram, karena tentu saja saya kelak ingin membangun keluarga dengan basis worldview “Pramis” yang sangat progresif dan revolusioner.

Terakhir soal pandangan Pram tentang keningratan. Siapa saja yang pernah membaca karya Pram mesti mengerti bagaimana kukuhnya sikap anti feodalisme Pram sekalipun terhadap kultur kebudayaannya sendiri, Jawa. Bagaimana Pram itu berusaha secara total mendepak omong kosong soal klaim “Trahing Kusuma Rembesing Madu”, bagi Pram worldview “meritrokasi” yang menghargai orang dari kecakapan, kapasitas, keilmuan, jasa, dan kinerja itu yang utama, bukan worldview tengik feodalisme yang menghargai dan memberikan kedudukan pada seseorang hanya berdasarkan darah keturunan.

Oleh karena itulah sangat bisa dipahami jika Pram begitu mengapresiasi Ken Arok dan Gajah Mada yang hanya anak desa dan anak petani tetapi berkat kecerdasan dan kecakapannya mampu menjadi pemimpin penting di sebuah kerajaan besar yang begitu berwibawa. Sungguh sistem meritrokasi sudah terselanggara dengan baik di tanah Jawa pada zamannya Ken Arok dan Gajah Mada, sebelum kemudian budaya meritrokasi itu menjadi putus dan mustahil lagi di tanah Jawa sejak berkuasanya Panembahan Senopati pendiri kerajaan Mataram Islam yang sudah feodal tengik sejak dalam pemikiran.

Dari situ juga bisa dipahami jika Pram pun kemudian lebih bersimpati pada sosok rebel Ki Ageng Manggir Wanabaya yang tidak sudi mengakui kekuasaan Mataram Islam dan yang lantas dibunuh dengan licik oleh Panembahan Senopati demi ambisi kekuasaan pribadi dan anak cucunya.

Demikianlah Pram yang menampik klaim kehormatan kalangan ningrat yang mengaku “terberi” dari langit, begitupun saya dengan kukuh juga mewarisi nilai-nilai anti feodalisme semacam itu. Maka ketika suatu hari ada seseorang yang berusaha sok kenal dan sok akrab dengan saya, dan dengan pedenya tanpa saya minta kok tiba-tiba mengirimi via WA foto makam leluhurnya dan mengatakan dengan bahasa yang secara eksplisit “pamer leluhur”: ini lho mas makam buyut saya (yang hanya tokoh dari golongan ningrat, dan bukan tokoh yang berjasa bagi bangsa atau kemanusiaan). Tentu saja dengan demikian, alih-alih saya jadi semakin respek pada orang yang baru saya kenal itu, justru saya menjadi sangat sangat ilfil dengan kenorakan feodalismenya yang sudah ketinggalan jaman itu.

Nah, seperti itulah jejak-jejak keterpengaruhan saya dari seorang Pramoedya Ananta Toer, sekarang saya ingin bercerita tentang jejak-jejak keterpengaruhan dari orang Blora satunya lagi, Bhante Sri Pannavaro Mahathera.

Sejak masa-masa akhir SMK saya memang mengalami kegelisahan eksistensial soal spiritualitas. Meski saya terlahir di keluarga muslim dan terdidik dengan baik di lingkungan akademik berbasis Islam, tetapi itu tidak menyurutkan pencarian saya soal spiritualitas yang lebih mendalam.

Berbagai ajaran mistik Islam (Tasawuf) saya pelajari, ajaran kebatinan berbagai agama saya pelajari, tapi semuanya seperti tidak memuaskan dahaga pencarian spiritual saya, sampai kemudian di suatu hari saya menonton Dhamma TV, channel TV lokal dari Malang yang khusus membabarkan Buddhisme. Nah dari situlah salah satu pewejang ajaran Buddha yang diliput adalah Bhante Sri Pannavaro Mahathera dan saat itu sedang mengupas meditasi dan bagaimana obat melenyapkan kekotoran batin, seketika itu saya terkesiap dan membatin: inilah ajaran spiritual yang selama ini saya cari, bukan ajaran yang sibuk muluk-muluk membahas dogma, melainkan ajaran yang berfokus bagaimana menggladi batin (istilah “menggladi batin” inilah istilah dari Bhante Pannavaro yang sangat saya suka) untuk melenyaplan kekotoran batin.

Sejak menonton wejangan Bhante Pannavaro itulah saya menjadi semakin gandrung dangan ajaran Buddha, saya menjadi getol membaca artikel-artikel Buddhisme, bahkan sampai saya sering mbolos sekolah hanya untuk nongkrong di warnet dan membaca seluk beluk perihal Buddhisme. Dan sebenarnya bahkan sampai sekarang juga saya tetap jatuh cinta dan tiada habis-habisnya mempelajari Buddhisme. Tetapi entah mengapa di antara banyak para pembabar Buddhisme yang saya simak sampai sekarang, tetap yang paling berkesan di hati saya adalah Bhante Pannavaro.

Dari Bhante Pannavaro saya banyak belajar tentang keheningan, welas asih, dan pandangan Buddhisme yang universal dan tidak dogmatik. Sebenarnya hampir semua Bhikkhu juga mengajarkan hal yang sama soal keheningan, welas asih, dan tidak dogmatik atau melekati sebuah pandangan secara fanatik, toh Buddha Gautama sendiri mengibaratkan Dhamma (ajaran Buddha) itu sebatas rakit untuk menuju ke pulau seberang, ketika sudah sampai ke pulau seberang maka tentu tidak elok jika terus menyunggi dan menentang rakit itu kemana-mana.

Begitulah Buddhisme itu dengan sendirinya sebenarnya sudah bersifat “beyond religion” (melampaui agama terlembaga) yang dilekati erat-erat sebagai keyakinan kultus.

Namun demikian tidak sedikit pula ditemui para Bhikkhu atau tokoh Buddhis yang pandangan spiritualnya juga sangat kerdil dan memiliki “klaim kebenaran tunggal” bahwa jika tidak melalui meditasi Buddhisme orang tidak akan bisa mencapai pencerahan spiritual, nah dengan Bhikhhu atau pandita Buddhis yang seperti ini saya juga tidak cocok. Bagi saya banyak jalan menuju Nibbana (padamnya nafsu), tidak harus saklek melalui metode meditasi dari agama Buddha saja. Ajaran dan metode spiritual dari para leluhur Nusantara yang sekarang terwadahi dalam kelompok Penghayat Kepercayaan pun juga sangat bisa membawa pada pencerahan spiritual dan pelenyapan kekotoran batin.

Meski Bhante Pannavaro sendiri selama ini tidak secara eksplisit mengatakan bahwa ada jalan lain selain agama Buddha untuk menuju Nibbana, tetapi dari bahasa wejangan-wejangan ceramahnya sudah terasa sekali muatan spirit universalnya itu, wejangan-wejangan dhammanya soal keheningan dan welas asih saya yakin akan mudah diterima siapa saja pendengarnya meski dari lintas agama dan lintas keyakinan. Karena sekali lagi, universal dan beyond religion.

Saya juga masih ingat ketika beberapa tahun yang lalu seorang pandita Buddhis yang nyentrik mendiang Romo Hudoyo Hupudio banyak dihujat dan disesat-sesatkan (dianggap berpandangan salah) oleh beberapa umat Buddha karena menggagas grup meditasi bernama MMD (Meditasi Mengenal Diri) yang mensisteskan ajaran Buddha, khususnya meditasi Vipassana dengan pendekatan spiritual kritis dari Jiddu Krishnamurti, tidak menganggap penting pengakuan verbal mengenai triratana, serta menolak pendekatan Abhidhamma Pitaka yang dianggap hanya wacana teori yang bertele-tele.

Anehnya justru saat itu Bhante Pannavaro tidak ikut-ikutan mengutuk dan mencaci Romo Hudoyo. Sebaliknya orang nomer satu di Sangha Theravada Indonesia ini malah memberikan penghormatan yang sebaik-baiknya dan sehormat-hormatnya pada Romo Hudoyo Hupudio yang nyentrik itu, bahkan juga sering mengadakan retreat dan bimbingan meditasi secara bersama-sama.

Dari situlah kekaguman saya pada manusia universal Sri Pannavaro Mahathera itu semakin membuncah. Jika bisa diringkas saripati dari keseluruhan wejangan beliau, maka itu tidak lain adalah tentang keheningan setiap saat (meditasi nir-waktu), metta (welas asih universal), dan beyond religion.

Demikianlah jejak-jejak keterpengaruhan spiritualisme dari Bhante Sri Pannavaro Mahathera itu dikemudian hari saya lebur bersama-sama dengan jejak-jejak keterpengaruhan intelektualisme yang progresif revolusioner dari Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Dari Bhante Pannavaro saya belajar soal “revolusi batin”, dari Pram saya belajar soal “revolusi sosial”.
